A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=
ies.
This draft is a work item of the BiDirectional or Server-Initiated HTTP Wo=
rking Group of the IETF.

Title : A Multiplexing Extension for WebSockets
	Author(s) : John A. Tamplin
                          Takeshi Yoshino
	Filename : draft-ietf-hybi-websocket-multiplexing-05.txt
	Pages : 38
	Date : 2012-09-05

Abstract:
The WebSocket Protocol [RFC6455] requires a new transport connection
for every WebSocket connection. This presents a scalability problem
when many clients connect to the same server, and is made worse by
having multiple clients running in different tabs of the same user
agent. This extension provides a way for separate logical WebSocket
connections to share an underlying transport connection.

Please send feedback to the hybi@ietf.org mailing list.

Hi all,

No semantic change.

Changes from -04 to -05
- moved channel ID encoding definition before encapsulated frame diagram
since it's confusing. it looks like the diagram is for both control and
non-control channel now.
- removed the stale sentence talking about EncapsulatedControlFrame
multiplex control block (already removed) in "Operations and Events on
Multiplexed Connection" section.

Please help the NomCom in any way you can!

-------- Original Message -------

The IETF Nominations Committee (NomCom) is currently seeking
nominations for individuals to serve on the IESG, IAB, and IAOC.
Additionally, this is an announcement that the NomCom is seeking
feedback on individuals who have accepted nominations for IETF
leadership positions.

It is very important to the NomCom process that we get input from a
broad spectrum of the community. Therefore, in case members of your
working group do not read the IETF announcement and discussion lists,
the NomCom would appreciate your help in disseminating the following
information.

The NomCom website contains information about this year's NomCom
including the positions we are seeking to fill, and the qualifications
required for these positions:

https://www.ietf.org/group/nomcom/2012/

The NomCom is accepting nominations until September 24. Nominations
for any position can be made using the following web tool:

https://www.ietf.org/group/nomcom/2012/nominate

Feedback about individuals who the NomCom is considering can be
providing using the following web tool:

https://www.ietf.org/group/nomcom/2012/input

The feedback tool provides a list of individuals who have agreed to be
considered for each position. We will be updating this list in the coming
weeks as more individuals accept nominations.

Feedback provided to the NomCom is kept strictly confidential!

Note that use of the NomCom web tools require an ietf.org (i.e.,
datatracker) account. You can create an ietf.org account by visiting the
following URL:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/accounts/create/

As an alternative to using the web tools, you can send email to the
NomCom at nomcom12@ietf.org to make a nomination or provide input to
the committee.

Thank you for your help,
- Matt Lepinski

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=
ies.
This draft is a work item of the BiDirectional or Server-Initiated HTTP Wo=
rking Group of the IETF.

Title : A Multiplexing Extension for WebSockets
	Author(s) : John A. Tamplin
                          Takeshi Yoshino
	Filename : draft-ietf-hybi-websocket-multiplexing-06.txt
	Pages : 41
	Date : 2012-09-19

No semantic change.

- Added "Number Encoding in Multiplex Control Blocks" section. Though
length encoding is almost the same as WebSocket core spec, we need some
additional texts to define error handling.
- Gave a name "logical channel ID tag" to the logical channel ID at the
head of encapsulating message to distinguish it from logical channel IDs in
multiplex control blocks
- Moved texts explaining error handling that is applied to both control and
non-control channel to section 7 "Framing"
- Added notes like "unless _Fail the Physical Connection_ is already done
for any other error" so that implementors can choose flexibly at which
point they stop processing multiplex control frame with error
- Clarified that
-- minimal number of bytes MUST be used for channel ID encoding
-- when a server received NewChannelSlot or AddChannelResponse, it MUST
fail the physical connection
-- when a client received AddChannelRequest, it MUST fail the physical
connection
-- RSV bits in multiplex control blocks must be 0
-- replying to AddChannelRequest may be delayed
-- if fallback bit is raised in a NewChannelSlot, the other fields MUST be 0

Reminder. I'm going to make this change on next release of multiplexing
spec unless anyone objects to it.

Thanks

Hi all,

For record, I'd like to state here that I'm going to postpone addition of
channel ID space separation to the first release of WebSocket multiplexing
specification.

Discussion on extending WebSocket for HTTP/2.0 framing was not
useless. WebSocket 2.0 might carry non-WebSocket traffic that needs
initiation of stream from both sides. Let's take into account this idea
then. We should finish WebSocket multiplexing 1.0 asap for wider adoption
of WebSocket.

Thanks

Hi all,

About error fatalness

I've added strawman texts about error handling on -04 release of the
multiplexing spec. Those who are interested in the multiplexing spec, could
you please take a look at them? Please post mail if you have opinions on it.
http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-hybi-websocket-multiplexing-06#section-9.5.1

In the next draft, I'm going to move 3001, 3002, 3003, 3004 to 2XXX and
make them fail the physical connection. Because we're using values in
previous AddChannelRequest/Response to build the next ones, it's bad to
just ignore bad ones with 3XXX DropChannel.

----

About overflow errors

I've defined codes for overflow errors but they don't have corresponding
texts explaining when/where they're used.

My idea is:
- fail the logical channel with 3006 when send quota is going to be equal
to or greater than 2^63 after adding the replenished send quota in the
received FlowControl.
- fail the physical connection with 2008 when the number of new channel
slots is going to be equal to or greater than 2^63 after adding the number
of new channel slots in the received NewChannelSlot.

Developers of server and UA for embedded system could live without
supporting 63 bit mode length header by asking applications on them to use
messages up to 2^16-1.

But regarding quota and slots, the other peer (server or UA) with much CPU
power and memory might send big value even if applications on them don't
use big messages. So, in reality, all servers and UAs have to be able to
handle value up to 2^63-1 for send quota and number of new channel slots.

Is this acceptable for you?

Thanks
Takeshi

Someone knows?

Does Chrome, Firefox or any browser implement per-message compression alrea=
dy, and if so beginning with which version - or is pywebsocket currently th=
e only implementation on the street?

Thanks,
Tobias

Perhaps we should have masked server to client traffic - I would not
have thought this would occur and hence argued against it - mia
culpa!
So some intermediaries do need to be updated.

I would still argue against it -- we shouldn't try and accommodate software
that broken where it isn't a security issue involved.

Masking wouldn't fix this case anyway.

According to the stackoverflow page, any occurrence of "get" with any
capitalisation, even as part of a longer word, trips the anti-virus.
As well as other words.

Being a 1:2^21 chance of that occurring in any sequence of 3 random
bytes, it would occur every megabyte or so, i.e. quite often.

Masking server to client traffic would just make the anti-virus block
the connection seemingly at random, which is arguably worse in this
instance, because it would be much more difficult to debug, and
impossible to workaround by encoding the messages in the application.

I wonder if the anti-virus blocks WSS (WS over TLS) when the trapped
messages occur in the encrypted form?

Or how it copes with XMPP chat messages like : "Don't forget to get the milk!"

I guess as John says, there is no accounting for broken software -
this is not a security issue just a false positive of an over zealous
security check.

cheers

It seems adding the Cache-Control header to the WebSocket handshake
improves success rate for some environment.

We've investigated one bug report [1] for Chrome, and found that there're
some caches deployed in Thailand which corrupt server's opening handshakes
by replacing the value in the Connection header with close.

This doesn't happen if Firefox is used. Some tests using reduced header set
indicated that it's because Firefox puts the Cache-Control and Pragma
header like this:

Pragma: no-cache
Cache-Control: no-cache

in its WebSocket client's handshakes while Chrome does not send such
headers.

I guess that the proxy is caching server's opening handshake and sending
the cached data but after overwriting the Connection header ignoring the
meaning of "Connection: Upgrade".

Basically, we want Upgrade non-compliant proxies to be replaced with new
ones rather than taking work around, but don't have much reluctance to use
of the headers.
