All,
I just sent the latest draft of the RFC 1483 update to the I-D editor. I did
take into account some of the comments received, as follows (as far as I can
recollect):

1) the SNAP ID for VPNs has been assigned by IANA and is now in the draft
2) Bert Manfredi's comment concerning MAC address bit order: I added words to
the effect that the bit order of the MAC address in the BPDU is the same as it
would be on the LAN, e.g. canonical for ethernet, 802.5/FDDI for 802.5
3) At Thomas Narten's suggestion, added words to the effect that this memo
updates RFC 1483.
4) Ditto, "This" has no antecedent, replaced "This" with "RFC 2427".
5) Ditto, in security considerations, reworded warning about security of
bridged LANs to "has same vulnerabilities as other bridging architectures".

I did not understand Bert's first comment, and think that it is probably an
ATM Forum issue rather than an issue for this draft.

WRT Thomas' other comments, there is a formal reference to IEEE earlier in the
section. It would be nice to have a list of changes from RFC 1483, and if
Thomas wishes to provide one, I'd be happy to add it.

Sorry about the delay on this, folks -- my day job has been taking big gulps
of my time.

Andy, unless there are further issues, I'd like to ask you to ask the IESG for
an IETF last call.

rgds
Dan

I am not in a position to provide one. However, it is a general
requirement from the IESG that you provide such a list of differences
(see http://www.ietf.cnri.reston.va.us/ID-nits.html). The goal is to
aid implementors that have already implemented the previous RFC and
want a quick list of the differences. You don't need to list the minor
editorial changes. Rule of thumb: if an implementor would want to
know, it ought to be mentioned.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Internetworking Over NBMA Working Group of the IETF.

	Title : Multiprotocol Encapsulation over ATM Adaptation Layer
                          5
	Author(s)	: D. Grossman, J. Heinanen
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ion-multiprotocol-atm-03.txt
	Pages		: 22
	Date		: 02-Jun-99

This memo describes two encapsulations methods for carrying network
interconnect traffic over AAL type 5 over ATM. The first method
allows multiplexing of multiple protocols over a single ATM virtual
connection whereas the second method assumes that each protocol is
carried over a separate ATM virtual connection.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ion-multiprotocol-atm-03.txt

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-ion-multiprotocol-atm-03.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ion-multiprotocol-atm-03.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
	MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
	feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
	command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
	a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
	exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
	"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
	up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Internetworking Over NBMA Working Group of the IETF.

	Title : Virtual Private Networks Identifier
	Author(s)	:  B. Fox, B. Gleeson
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ion-vpn-id-01.txt
	Pages		: 5
	Date		: 15-Jun-99

Virtual Private IP networks may span multiple Autonomous Systems or
Service Providers. There is a requirement for the use of a globally
unique VPN identifier in order to be able to refer to a particular
VPN (see section 6.1.1 of [1]). This document proposes a format for
a globally unique VPN identifier.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ion-vpn-id-01.txt

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-ion-vpn-id-01.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ion-vpn-id-01.txt".

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

directories. This draft is a work item of the Internetworking Over
NBMA Working Group of the IETF.

	Title : Configuration of NHRP over Mixed Environment with PVC
                          and SVC
	Author(s)	: Y. Itoh
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ion-nhrp-mixed-pvp-00.txt
	Pages		: 6
	Date		: 16-Jun-99

This document describes an address resolution process tailored to work
under NBMA Next Hop Resolution Protocol (NHRP)[1] over Asynchronous
Transfer Mode (ATM) network with mixture of PVC environment and SVC
environment. Now consider the case where NHRP clients, each are
connected to PVC network, try to communicate each other through SVC
network existing on the path between the PVC networks of each client.

hi all,
I am interested in atm and ip over atm.
I study and read atm UNI 3.1/4.0,ILMI.

I have som questions.
to form ATM address , we need network prefix. same network prefix means
same domain.

 __                            ____           ___
|    |______________|      |_____ |      |
|__|              _______|      |           |      |
                  -              |___|           |___|
 ___ ____ -
|___|
end systems               MUX          ATM SWTICH

end systems, MUX, ATM switch connect each other.
1.does it have same network prefix?

ATM switch have user-side, network-side. address thru ILMI is
registered.
calling party - ATM port mapping table( network-side). called party- ATM
port
mapping table (user-side)
address mapping consist of upper mapping.
2. is it right?
I need adding infomation for address mapping.

3.In ILMI Specification Ver4.0, chap 8. Link Management MIB-section
8.2.2.1
  interface index(R)    I don't understand  its value.
"Interface indices are used in a number of ATM Interface MIB subtree to
identify a particular physical
 or virtual interface on the ATM device. the interdace index
object(atmPortIndex) has the value zero in all SNMP messages."
  I think that interface index is physical port number then, upper
explanation, may be, is not.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 what do it means?
~~~~~~~~~~~~
   chap 9. Address Registrantion MIB, section 9.4.1.1 Interface
Index(r)
   -"The Interface Index object(atmfNetPrefixPort) is the same as that
for the Physical
      interface as defined in setction 8.2.2.1"

 I think user-side consists of table thru ILMI, portnumber, network
prefix , status.
 port number is ATM switch physical port numer.
is it right?
~~~~~~
it is very basic question. and may be, have not relevance to working
group topic.
but I didn't find group to solve these problems.
thank you for your time and look forward to sending reply.
regards,
       shirley
Folks,
The changes from version 08 to version 09 of
the NHRP MIB were very minimal and editorial in nature.
(i.e. a couple of spelling corrections and replacing
"experimental" with "mib-2").
A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Internetworking Over NBMA Working Group of the IETF.
	Title		: Definitions of Managed Objects for the NBMA Next Hop
                          Resolution Protocol (NHRP)
	Author(s)	: M. Greene, J. Cucchiara, J. Luciani
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ion-nhrp-mib-09.txt
	Pages		: 69
	Date		: 23-Jun-99
This memo defines a portion of the Management Information Base (MIB)
for use with network management protocols in the Internet community.
In particular, it describes managed objects for the Next Hop
Resolution Protocol (NHRP) as defined in RFC 2332.
A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ion-nhrp-mib-09.txt
Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-ion-nhrp-mib-09.txt".
A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt
Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.
Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ion-nhrp-mib-09.txt".
NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
	MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility.  To use this
	feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
	command.  To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
	a MIME-compliant mail reader.  Different MIME-compliant mail readers
	exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
	"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
	up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.
Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.
