A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP over VBI Working Group of the IETF.

Title : The Transmission of IP Over the Vertical Blanking
                          Interval of a Television Signal
	Author(s)	: R. Panabaker, S. Wegerif, D. Zigmond
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ipvbi-nabts-04.txt
	Pages : 19
	Date : 03-Sep-99

This document describes a method for broadcasting IP data using the
vertical blanking interval of television signals. It includes a
description for compressing IP headers on unidirectional networks, a
framing protocol identical to SLIP, a forward error correction
scheme, and the NABTS byte structures.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ipvbi-nabts-04.txt

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-ipvbi-nabts-04.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ipvbi-nabts-04.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

3) LVT Logic
Designed for 3.3 V applications, logic line includes the 74LVTH273 octal D-type
flip-flop with Clear, the 74LVT373/74LVTH373 octal transparent latch with three-
state outputs, and the 74LVT374/74LVTH374 octal D-type with three-state
outputs. Available with and without Bus-hold, the high speed (less than 4.5
nanosecond) ICs can be used for off-board driving applications such as
backplanes, memory arrays, telecom switches, and in networking applications.
Bus-hold maintains a valid logic state on an unloaded input, eliminating the
need for external pull-up or pull-down resistors to prevent floating inputs.

Subject: Fw: VBI group response

It was recently brought to my attention that a time of 60 seconds may be =
proposed as the time between transmissions of a group header address in =
VBI NABST format files. If I understand correctly what is being =
proposed, in my opinion, this wait time is far too long, and the memory =
required far too large.
=20
For example, using 11 available lines in the VBI (NTSC format), one =
would have to wait for 39,600 lines or 1,306,000 Bytes of information to =
be transmitted before a new group header and/or a retransmit would =
occur. For full frame,(253 lines in NTSC) these number would increase =
to over 900,000 lines or 30+MB of memory!!
=20
Thus we would like to propose that "lines" or "packets" be considered as =
the measure between headers rather than "time".......and the number of =
packets should be either 256 or 512.
=20
With 256 or 512 packets being the measure, there would be a repeat of =
the group header address:
(a) every 2.133 or 4.266 seconds for services using 2 lines in the VBI. =
(If I were providing a service on 2 lines, I would prefer the shorter =
time of close to 2 seconds)
(b) every 0.5 or 1 second for services using the full available VBI, and
(c) every 60th or 30th of a second for Full Frame
=20
The hold memory requirements at the receiver/decoder would now be =
limited to 512 packets x 33 Bytes/packet (NABST) =3D 16,896 Bytes =
.................for header and data retransmits, for error detection =
and correction, which seems very reasonable.
=20
These figures are ideal for an NTSC signal and would also likely be =
acceptable for a PAL system, although they could be increased slightly =
to get the best performance in PAL.
=20
I hope this is useful for the discussion, and I would appreciate your =
comment.

Harry,
I believe there is some confusion regarding this restriction. This rule
applies to the server to ensure that the reuse of group addresses does not
result in corrupt data on the client. It was made sufficiently long to
ensure that an error condition does not persist. Careful reading of the new
spec will show that there are no requirements on the client to cache data,
and in fact this restriction on the server lowers the overhead on the client
because it allows the client to ignore data that has not been qualified
after the 60 second limit (if the client implementation so desires).

By the way. It is interesting to note that you can reuse a group address by
sending all IP packets with full headers for the 60 second duration.

Ruston

It was recently brought to my attention that a time of 60 seconds may be

The hold memory requirements at the receiver/decoder would now be limited to

very reasonable.

These figures are ideal for an NTSC signal and would also likely be

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP over VBI Working Group of the IETF.

Title : The Transmission of IP Over the Vertical Blanking
                          Interval of a Television Signal
	Author(s)	: R. Panabaker, S. Wegerif, D. Zigmond
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ipvbi-nabts-05.txt
	Pages : 19
	Date : 27-Sep-99

This document describes a method for broadcasting IP data in a
unidirectional manner using the vertical blanking interval of
television signals. It includes a description for compressing IP
headers on unidirectional networks, a framing protocol identical to
SLIP, a forward error correction scheme, and the NABTS byte
structures.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then

In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ipvbi-nabts-05.txt".
