Hi Alex,

There are a few areas related to CE-based IPsec VPNs which we may want to
address in the new charter.

The current CE-based drafts (draft-ietf-ppvpn-ce-based-03.txt and
draft-declercq-ppvpn-ce-based-sol-00.txt) really focus just on the
provider-provisioned model. Do we want to explicitly limit the scope of the
WG to this model? I don't think so.

I would personally like to leave the door open for the WG to work on the
user-provisioned L3VPN (IPsec and possibly SSL/TLS) model as well. I think
the new charter should note the distinction and address the scope of work
for each model:

- For the user-provisioned IPsec VPN model, there is a need for work in the
areas of provisioning, routing, resilience, topology, discovery, and
possibly QOS mechanisms. These areas will fit well in the L3VPN WG, and are
not being addressed in the IPSEC WG.

- These same areas and others need to be addressed in the
provider-provisioned CE-based IPsec VPN space, but will likely result in
different recommendations and focus.

As a final point, L3VPN remote access (joining the VPN from an individual
host at an arbitrary IP address) may deserve a mention in the charter. I
don't think we should automatically exclude it.

Regards,
Paul

Paul,

I agree that there is interest in the area of user-provisioned VPNs
  and remote access.

However, we can't put everything in the charter now. The latest rev
of the charter I have now (will post soon) already has more than 15
documents and about a year worth of just WG Last Calls. I think this
is more than enough. Let's deal with what we have on the plate
  already.

If active work is going on and people have a sense of urgency in the
user-provisioned VPN space, we may need to think about a separate
  WG.

Folks-

I believe the updated rev of the charter below should reflect the
discussion on the list. The diff from the previously posted version
 can be found here:

   http://psg.com/~zinin/ietf/ppvpn/l3vpn-diff-00-01.html

Note that QoS is in the list of for-now-excluded items. I'd like us
to finish current work items before taking on new work, and
especially such broad topic as QoS.

 Regards.

Layer 3 Virtual Private Networks (l3vpn)

Chair(s): <under discussion>

Area Director(s):
   Thomas Narten <narten@us.ibm.com>
   Erik Nordmark <nordmark@sun.com>

Area Advisor:
   Thomas Narten <narten@us.ibm.com>

Technical Advisor:
   Alex Zinin <zinin@psg.com>

Description of Working Group:

This working group is responsible for defining and specifying a
limited number of solutions for supporting provider-provisioned
Layer-3 (routed) Virtual Private Networks (L3VPNs).

The WG is responsible for standardization of the following solutions:

   1. BGP/MPLS IP VPNs (based on RFC 2547)
   2. IP VPNs using Virtual Routers
   3. CE-based VPNs using IPSEC

The following VPN deployment scenarios will be considered by the WG:

   1. Internet-wide: VPN sites attached to arbitratry points in
      the Internet

   2. Single SP/single AS: VPN sites attached to the network of a
single provider within the scope of a single AS

   3. Single SP/multiple AS'es: VPN sites attached to the network
of a single provider consisting of multiple AS'es

   4. Cooperating SPs: VPN sites attached to networks of different
providers that cooperate with each other to provide VPN service

As part of this effort the WG will work on the following tasks
(additional work items will require rechartering):

   1. Requirements and framework for Layer 3 VPNs
   2. Solution documents for each approach listed above (including
      applicability statements)
   3. MIB definitions for each approach
   4. Security mechanisms for each approach

As a general rule, the WG will not create new protocols, but will provide
functional requirements for extensions of the existing protocols that will
be discussed in the protocol-specific WGs. The group will review proposed
protocol extensions for L3VPNs before they are recommended to appropriate
protocol-specific WGs.

Multicast and QoS support are excluded from the charter at this time.
They may be considered for inclusion in an updated charter
at a later time. Future work items may also include OAM support.

WG Milestones (optimistic):

Hi Alex,

RE: (from the updated WG charter)
"As a general rule, the WG will not create new protocols, but will provide
functional requirements for extensions of the existing protocols that will
be discussed in the protocol-specific WGs. The group will review proposed
protocol extensions for L3VPNs before they are recommended to appropriate
protocol-specific WGs."

This process needs to be more specific, or key items needed by the VPN
community could be delayed. I hope the charter statement can reflect a bit
more of flavor of the previous discussion (mostly in PPVPN messages entitled
"Draft charter for L3VPN: protocol-specific work").

First, the charter should reflect that the L3VPN WG expects specific actions
to take place when coordination with a protocol-specific WG is required.
For example, perhaps "The WG chair, with support from the ADs, will
coordinate with the relevant protocol-specific WG chair to ensure that the
item is adopted as a work item in that WG, or that specific reasons for its
rejection are expressed."

************** (earlier discussion on this point)

***************** (end)

If it is too much to include this kind of text in the charter, then the
charter should at least refer to a specific mechanism for coordinating with
other WGs.

In the earlier discussion, you (Alex) made the following proposal, which
seems fairly reasonable. Can we formalize this?

********************** (Alex's proposal)
Given that finally the extension specs have to live in the
protocol-specific WGs, how about we use the following process
   (draft):

     1. VPN folks who believe that a given protocol extension
is needed, come up with an individual draft describing
        the details.

     2. The draft is brought to the appropriate VPN WG. A discussion
on the mailing list AND in the room is held on the subject of
why this is needed and whether this is a good idea VPN-wise.
If there is no agreement on this--the draft does not go
        any further. Otherwise:

     3. The draft is taken to the protocol-specific WG. The WG
discusses if it is happy with it as a general approach, if
so takes it as a WG item. Otherwise, the WG chairs summarize
the discussion and send the summary to the VPN WG.

     4. If the draft is accepted by the protocol-specific WG,
the appropriate VPN framework document is updated to describe
it and refer to the doc.

     5. The WG chairs coordinate timing for the draft.
When ready to go to IESG, the draft is LC'ed in both WGs.

****************(end)

Finally, I do think that "functional requirements" should be amended to read
"functional requirements and/or detailed protocol specifications," since
there is usually more clarity in the actual specifications than in the more
general functional requirements, and it should generally make it faster and
easier to arrive at a decision on the proposal.

Regards,
Paul

I should admit that I don't believe that the WG charter is the right
place to document the coordination process. When the WGs are approved,
we (the ADs) will work with the WG chairs to ensure that this process
is followed.

I don't feel comfortable saying the this WG is supposed to work out
detailed protocol specification, as this is what protocol-specific WG
are responsible for. On the other hand, nobody will try to stop the
authors from showing to the VPN WGs the specific mechanisms they are
planning to take to the protocol WGs.

Alex and all,

I noticed there does not seem to be any milestone in the proposed
charter regarding IPv6 VPNs. Is this something you've already discussed
and agreed to take out (sorry, I couldn't keep up with the whole thread
so I may have missed that discussion) or is it more of an omission?

While IPv6 need not be explicitely mentioned in the body of the charter
(since the text is generic and thus applies equally to IPv4 and IPv6),
specifying a solution for IPv6 VPNs would call for a milestone.

For memory, the current PPVPN Working Group has developed a Working
Group document for IPv6 VPNs (draft-ietf-ppvpn-bgp-ipv6-vpn-03.txt,
"BGP-MPLS VPN extension for IPv6 VPN"). The status for that document was
that its finalisation and submission to IESG was on hold, pending
2547bis publication since it is based on it.

Considering the proposed milestone for 2547bis ("Dec 2003 Submit
BGP/MPLS VPNs specification and AS to IESG for publication as PS"), we
could perhaps include something like:
"
March 2004 Submit specification of BGP-MPLS VPN extension for IPv6 VPN
to IESG for publication as PS
             (draft-ietf-ppvpn-bgp-ipv6-vpn-03)
"

Thanks

Francois

Description of Working Group:

Alex is the routing advisor.

L3VPN WG will review proposed
protocol extensions for L3VPNs before they are recommended to appropriate
protocol-specific WGs.

Multicast and QoS support are excluded from the charter at this time.
They may be considered for inclusion in an updated charter
at a later time. Future work items may also include OAM support.

Hi Alex,

draft-ietf-ppvpn-applicability-guidelines-01.txt is not
addressed in the milestones.
I (and Co-authors of the draft) think that it should become
an Informational RFC, and we hope it is addressed in the
milestones.

Thanks,
Junichi.

Hasn't this document already served its purpose? I don't really see the
point of making it an RFC.

Current version of this document has not cover l2 material completely.
I'm going to revise this document before Vienna meeting incorporating recent
progress of major l2 document.
And I hope that I will make final revision of this document after these items

 Alex,

Just a minor question/clarification.

I assume that VPN deployment scenarios 4 will involve the case of multiple SPs with either single AS VPN or multi-AS VPN, right?

For example, a company's intranet VPN is supported by several regional SPs or an extranet VPN supported by several SPs.

Or it is meant for something else.

Anyway, I assume this is an important WG scope question.

Thanks,

cliff

Description of Working Group:

Alex is the routing advisor.

Junichi,

Wrt L2, it would seem to be useful to think about a separate
  document for L2.

However, on the question of the draft below becoming an RFC, I am
with Eric here, but I will leave this discussion and decision to
the chairs of the new WG.

I have no objection.

Anyway, I will try to revise the draft soon, since the current
version expires in this month.

Defeng and all participants,

There will be two meetings in Vienna to address L2 and L3 VPN work. I
expect the agendas for these two meetings to be posted to the ppvpn,
l2vpn, and l3vpn lists by the end of this week.=20

I am sorry you have been having difficulties with the mail list. People
at Nortel have been notified and are looking into this. Anyone with
specific error messages or debug information documenting a problem with
the list can forward it to John Pugh [johnpugh@nortelnetworks.com]. He
has offered to try and help.

Rick

Subject: How about the agenda for the 57th IETF ppvpn wg meeting ?

Hi, all

The 57th IETF meeting is forthcoming, but I don't know the agenda of
PPVPN wg
yet, and I wrote e-mails to the maillist and some important individuals
to
inquire the arrangement, but they are always rejected by the server or
something called Lyris Listmanager, I don't know the reason.

I just registered to the maillist of l3vpn and l2vpn today. and I have a
concern about the operation of vpn relevant wg, I wonder what happened
to
ppvpn wg,and what is the arrangement in the following future.

Who can clarify the question?

TIA & Regards

Sincerely Yours

Hi, all

The 57th IETF meeting is forthcoming, but I don't know the agenda of PPVPN wg
yet, and I wrote e-mails to the maillist and some important individuals to
inquire the arrangement, but they are always rejected by the server or
something called Lyris Listmanager, I don't know the reason.

I just registered to the maillist of l3vpn and l2vpn today. and I have a
concern about the operation of vpn relevant wg, I wonder what happened to
ppvpn wg,and what is the arrangement in the following future.

Who can clarify the question?

TIA & Regards

Sincerely Yours
