Hi all,

We have at least two recent proposals for doing something to TCP=E2=80=99s=
 IW:

- a proposal to dynamically configure the initial window (indirectly, by =
letting applications specify flow sizes) via a socket option
(draft-you-tcpm-configuring-tcp-initial-window-00, to be presented)

- a proposal to pace the initial window ( =
draft-sallantin-tcpm-initial-spreading-00, presented at the London IETF: =
 http://www.ietf.org/proceedings/89/slides/slides-89-iccrg-1.pdf =
<http://www.ietf.org/proceedings/89/slides/slides-89-iccrg-1.pdf> )

Hence, we decided to dedicate a short slot within the ICCRG meeting at =
the upcoming IETF to discussing the future of TCP=E2=80=99s IW, see:
http://www.ietf.org/proceedings/91/agenda/agenda-91-iccrg =
<http://www.ietf.org/proceedings/91/agenda/agenda-91-iccrg>
- It would be great if folks could take a look at the drafts mentioned =
above and get ready to present their arguments. There is still time on =
the agenda, so if someone has a last-minute proposal for a short =
presentation, in particular on the IW topic, let us know.

Cheers,
Michael (and David)

Dear all,

We just received your responses to the short presentation Michael Welzl did
in the last ICCRG meeting, and would like to thank you.
Reading your comments, we would like to specify some points about Initial
Spreading and notably the main differences with the Pacing.

We limit the spreading to the IW because it has been shown that the Pacing
downgrades the long lived flows performance.
*Understanding the Performance of TCP Pacing, Amit Aggarwal, Stefan Savage,
and Thomas Anderson. IEEE INFOCOM 2000 Conference on Computer
Communications, March 2000, pages 1157 - 1165. *

Unlike Pacing, we use a bounded spreading time. This enables two major
improvements:

   -

The performance is not mitigated by a wrong RTT measurement
   -

The performance remains good for all kind of network.

For example, considering a long latency, we use a spreading time
sufficient to not suffer from the bursts but small enough to not add an
unnecessary delay. In case of short latency, we use the regular pacing time
(RTT/IW)

You can find further details here:
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-sallantin-tcpm-initial-spreading-00

We are really interested in receiving your feedback.

Regards,
Renaud Sallantin

PS : We are not sure if we should continue this discussion on the ICCRG
list or (and) in the TCPM list?

Typo correction:

s/scad-fq/sch_fq/ was implemented in linux 3.12

see http://lwn.net/Articles/564825/ for benchmarks.

The pacing setsockopt: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.network/284527=
 .

(It would be good for the internet research community to be paying
attention to lwn - subscriptions are cheap (and all articles are
available for free 2 weeks after publication). It is worth 10 other
journals I care not to mention, and it comes out on wednesday evenings
every week, and takes about an hour to read.)

ietf preso on these things:
http://www.ietf.org/proceedings/88/slides/slides-88-tcpm-9.pdf

Give the authorship of sch_fq, it is not rocket science to guess one
place where this is deployed widely.

From: Eric Dumazet <edumazet@google.com>

Fair Queue packet scheduler with optional per flow rate shaping.

- Uses perfect flow match (not stochastic hash like SFQ/FQ_codel)
- Uses the new_flow/old_flow separation from FQ_codel
- Special FIFO queue for high prio packets (no need for PRIO + FQ)
- Uses a hash table of RB trees to locate the flows at enqueue() time
- Smart on demand gc (at enqueue() time, RB tree lookup evicts old
  unused flows)
- Dynamic memory allocations.
- Designed to allow millions of concurrent flows per Qdisc.
- Small memory footprint : ~2K per Qdisc, and 96 bytes per flow.
- Single high resolution timer for throttled flows (if any).
- One RB tree to link throttled flows.
- Ability to have a max rate per flow. We might add a socket option
  to add per socket limitation.

Attempts have been made to add TCP pacing in TCP stack, but this
seems to add complex code to an already complex stack.

TCP pacing is welcomed for flows having idle times, as the cwnd
permits TCP stack to queue a possibly large number of packets.
