Celebrate 10 Years of the IETF Endowment with a Gift Today That Will Triple in Impact

14 Dec 2022

At IETF, the Internet standards built today enable the Internet of tomorrow. The work of the IETF benefits from everyone who contributes time and talent. Right now, you can also support the future of the IETF through a gift to the IETF Endowment, and your gift will be matched 2x by the Internet Society.

The end-of-year is often a reflective time, when we look back and consider our accomplishments, and look ahead to determine our priorities and goals. For many, it’s also a season of charitable giving. For those who choose to donate at this time of year, you have many causes from which to choose. As you weigh the causes important to you this season, the IETF Endowment is an option worthy of consideration.

The IETF Endowment was established in 2012 to help support the activities of the IETF. The Endowment is an investment in the future of the IETF. Why is supporting the Endowment important? Consider the following:

  • Continuing its more than 35-year legacy, the IETF offers a neutral venue for the global technical community to work together, ensuring technically solid and systematically vetted results. The IETF standard-setting process promotes contribution and discussion, resulting in standards that reflect sound technical expertise, embody real-world experience, and encourage broad adoption. It’s a process worth investing in now, and protecting for the future.
  • The IETF currently relies on a single significant funding source to support our administrative and legal structure, and technical tools. This is a risky position in an industry where market fluctuations, change in leadership, and/or shifting global priorities are known to happen. Diverse income sources provide important protection for current and future work at the IETF. Your gift to the IETF Endowment is part of creating a foundation built on multiple sources of funding, offering an important buffer against future uncertainties.
  • IETF is not a pay-to-play organization, which ensures that all participants can have a voice at the table. By pooling resources into a fund designated for future use, the IETF Endowment is a funding model that avoids the perception of influence through membership or donation. No single entity can claim credit for the support provided by aggregated funds and the interest accrued on them.

Now is a great time to give to the IETF Endowment—a contribution today will have triple the effect! The Internet Society has offered a matching funds opportunity, meaning that for every dollar given to the IETF Endowment, the IETF will receive a 2:1 match up to US$12M, and a 1:1 match for another US$6M. In many circumstances, a gift to the IETF Endowment is also tax deductible.

I invite you to learn more about the IETF Endowment, and if you feel so inclined, to make a gift today.

If you’d like to begin a conversation about the IETF Endowment, I encourage you to reach out to me via email.

Warm wishes for a happy and healthy new year, and many thanks for all the ways you support IETF, including your consideration of a gift in support of the IETF Endowment.
