Even if you are not a long-time IETF participant—or if you are just looking to discover something new—there are many sessions scheduled during the IETF 113 meeting that will include topics and discussions of interest. Check out the IETF 113 newcomers webpage for more information, and there's still time to register if you haven't already.

IETF Hackathon Kickoff

The IETF Hackathon is an event where participants develop and test that their running code can interoperate with others, or where new open source code is written, often to implement new IETF work. The kickoff meeting describes all the projects that will go on this week. Feel free to join an existing team to add some more bugs! You do not need to bring code; you can simply join a topic of interest and contribute to existing open source, even if only testing.

The IEPG is an informal gathering that meets on the Sunday prior to IETF meetings. The intended theme of these meetings is essentially one of operational relevance in some form or fashion - although the chairs will readily admit that they will run with an agenda of whatever is on offer at the time! Ideally it covers operational and deployment reports, descriptions of real world problems, etc. 

This time we have presentations on IPv6 Extension Headers in the real world, BGPSEC, etc.

HotRFC Lightning Talks

HotRFC talks are short presentations of ideas, problem spaces, or proposals that IETFers should hear about, or possible  IETF or IRTF work. Presenters have 4 minutes to make their case for collaboration. Interested folks can continue the discussion after the session. Goals include encouraging brainstorming conversations, helping new work proposals find collaborators, raising awareness of relevant work going on elsewhere, and promoting Bar BOFs.

Computing-Aware Networking Birds-Of-a-Feather

This Birds-of-a-Feather (BOF) session aims at computing and network resource optimization by steering traffic to appropriate computing resources considering not only routing metric but also computing resource metric and service affiliation (using original resources even after clients move). The objective of the BOF is discussion of the problem space, prior to further work on solutions (although some solutions proposals do exist already).

An update on what’s going on in the Transport Area. The featured talk is about the continued relevance of SCTP now that QUIC is an IETF standard.

Many individual new submissions on important topics such as IP regional Internet blocking considerations or IPv4 policing at the IETF (i.e., should the IETF commit to maintain IPv4 forever). Another presentation on addressing gaps and issues with the current IPv6 addressing.

News and updates from the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF), along with talks by recent Applied Networking Research Prize winners (“Solar Superstorms: planning for an Internet apocalypse” and “Unbiased experiments in congested networks”).

Time to discuss the overall state of the Routing Area.  It typically includes updates from a handful of WGs and general discussions.

Media Type Maintenance Working Group

Media types and subtypes are used to identify particular payloads and their semantics as they are transported via application level protocols such as messaging (“email”) and the web (HTTP). This recently created working group is tasked with developing topics related to media types, starting with recommendations on how to handle registrations of future top-levels media types.

The Oblivious HTTP Application Intermediation (OHAI) working group will develop a protocol to improve privacy by allowing no single entity to know both the resource that was requested and the identity of the client that requested it.
